"You see, I have no coin," you explain. "I am sorry but I didn't realize this was a toll road. Is it possible you can make an exception for me? Just this once? I really am on an important errand!"
The little goblin's moldy skin turns bright red.
"An exception? AN EXCEPTION! I have a job here, buddy! I am not running a charity. Of course your errand is 'important.' Everyone's errand is 'important!' Do you think I should let everyone through? Do you want to see me arrested for shirking my duties? Do you want to see me in jail? My children out on the streets? Paupers! Having to dig up scraps of fool's gold for their keep! Do you want my children to turn to a life of crime!!!"
You inform the creature that you were just asking and ask if he could please calm down because his shrieks are beginning to shake the stalactites overhead, but this only seems to anger him more. He lets out a furious scream and a stalactite comes loose from the ceiling and almost impales the little guy. He looks up at the ceiling and screams, "Uh oh! Watch out!"
You see the stalactite coming and jump out of the way, unfortunately the bridge is narrow and there really isn't any place to jump to, so you end up falling, head over heels, into the abyss below.
You think you are a goner but before you can even start to scream you land with a splash in a deep, freezing cold pool of water. Thankfully, Rilla's magic torch fell with you and is floating on the surface of the water. You grab this and swim for shore. There is a narrow path along the side of the subterranean river and while you aren't sure where it goes, you can't make it back up the sides of the chasm, so your only choice seems to be this path.
You follow the dark, rushing stream but soon become aware of another noise over the sounds of the splashing water: the tapping of a hundred tiny hammers. Ahead you can see a brilliant light and you wonder if you have come somehow back to the surface and found the sun. When you turn the next corner of the path, however, you find yourself staring at a giant lake in a crystal basin. Crystals hang from the walls in elaborate and fantastical formations and everywhere there are swarms of goblin miners, carving and digging and loading up gems into carts. Ahead you can see a large tunnel with a sign that says "To the Main Highway" but there is also a dock up with rowboats that appear to be free for the taking.
Do you approach the Main Highway?
or
Do you borrow a boat and take to the river?
