Let the centipede live

You decide that centipedes are no threat to you, even if they are of unusually lengthy lengths, and you hop over it.

Unfortunately, the centipede did not know that it wasn't supposed to be a threat, so it jumps up like a spring and snatches your torch from your hand.

"Hey! Give that back!" you shout, but the beast is already scurrying down the path at an impressive clip and it is all you can do to keep up. After a bit it finally drops the torch before disappearing into a crack in the floor and slightly out of breath you bend down and retrieve it before continuing on your way.

You hear the rush of running water and soon your light falls on a deep chasm. You gaze down into the depths. From the sound you imagine that there is a subterranean river below, but the light from your torch cannot penetrate far enough into the abyss to illuminate the water. The path follows this deep gorge for a bit before it approaches a small bridge, crossing to the other side. In the middle of the bridge sits a funny little man with bat like ears, a cucumber like nose, and skin that resembles moldy bread.

He eyes you as you approach.

"If you want to pass you have to pay the toll!" he shrieks. "Pay the toll! Pay me!"

Unfortunately you have nothing with which to pay the little man.

Do you threaten him with violence because after all he is a very little man?

or

Do you try to appeal to his better nature and ask him to let you by just this once?
