You wake the bear

You decide the practical thing is to wake the bear from a distance, in case you need to run, so you stand a ways back and shout, "Hello!" The bear lurches to life, blinks at you sleepily, then yawns, apparently not in the mood to charge.

"Hello," he said. "Did Bartholomew send you?"

You say,

"Yes."

"No."

"Who is Bartholomew?"
